Here are some tips from my own experience:

1. If your camera is unfocusable you can hold a magnifying glass in front of it to get a sharper picture. It's a nuisance, but it works.
2. If you have to go buy a camera, try to borrow a few from friends so you know what features you need and what you can do without. Some cameras have no tripod mount; they are worthless. Some have no provision to change or disable the automatic power off; they are worthless. Some do not have lens attachments; see #1 but you really need to spend the extra bux for something more useable.
3. A good camera costs more than you want to spend. A not so good camera is not worth what you spend on it.
